This single family home in Evanston desperately needed more space to entertain a large, extended, blended family. The design team flipped the script and moved the kitchen to where the dining room was originally located. Rather than creating a huge open plan great room, we added an oxblood paneled arch to separate the new dining room from the family room, making the addition feel like it had always been there. The family room part of the addition didn’t have a 2nd floor over it, so we could vault the ceilings and add skylights, tucking the large kitchen under the existing 2nd story. We added cased openings from the dining room to the kitchen, and from the kitchen to the mudroom to make the new space feel like it belonged to the original cottage style home. Adding French doors, lots of windows, vintage inspired fireplaces and herringbone oak floors bring character to this otherwise completely new structure. A modern mix of furnishings and art add a nice juxtaposition to the character driven details the Imparfait design team added throughout.
